Collette Fortin

Ceiba Tree Jewelry (C)

After a long career in fashion design, Collette returned to the Fashion Institute of Technology to explore the field of jewelry design. She was awarded a degree, summa cum laude, in Jewelry Design in 1995, and began an eighteen-month-long apprenticeship with the famous goldsmith, Marne Ryan.

In October 2000, Collette entered her first juried art show, the Belgravia Court Section of the St. James Court Art Show in Louisville, KY. She was awarded First Prize in 3-dimensional Art at this show. She also won the Best New Entrant prize in September 2001 at the Gallery North Outdoor Art Show, in Setauket, NY. In October 2001, Collette returned to Belgravia Court and won First Prize in Wearable Art. As a result of receiving the Best New Entrant award at Gallery North, she was invited to participate in the Gallery’s Winners’ Circle Show in January of 2002.

In May of 2002, Collette was invited to participate in the Heckscher Museum’s (Huntington, NY) “Obsession” Show. In June 2002, The Art in the Park Show sponsored by the Art League of Long Island, Huntington, NY, awarded her an Honorable Mention. In October 2002, she won First Prize in Jewelry at Belgravia Court. In October 2003, she won Second Prize in Two-Dimensional Art at Belgravia Court.

In 2004 Collette was invited to participate in the Body Adorned Show at the Kentucky Museum of Arts + Design in Louisville, Kentucky. Jewelry Arts Magazine published a feature article about her work in their March/April 2004 issue. Collette received the First Place for Jewelry at the White Plains Outdoor Arts Festival in June 2004, and was the featured artist during the month of July at the Art On Main Gallery in Bristol, Vermont. She was again awarded the First Place for Jewelry at Belgravia Court in October 2004, received an Award of Excellence at the Art In The Park Show in Highland, Il, also in October 2004 and an Honorable Mention at the Art On The Green show in Judson, OH in August of 2004.

In the summer of 2002, Collette began teaching Jewelry Techniques and Design at the Art League of Long Island’s school in Huntington, NY and gave workshops in Jewelry Techniques and Design at the school of the East End Arts Council in Riverhead, NY in 2003. She also teaches Jewelry Techniques and Design at the Wassenberg Art Center in Van Wert, Ohio.

Collette’s Maya glyph jewelry captures the complexity and beauty of the Maya cosmology – their creation myths, their multitudinous gods, and their underworld. Her Polypod jewelry pieces celebrate form, line, and the interplay of negative and positive shapes. Each piece is hand-crafted with intricate hand-pierced details and features dazzling and unusual gemstones.

All of Collette’s jewelry is handmade by the artist. The designs are individually cut into the silver or gold by hand, and the gemstones individually mounted. Ceiba Tree jewelry is sold through museum shops and galleries and to private customers both directly and by mail order.

Collette has traveled extensively in Mexico and Guatemala to such Maya sites as Palenque, Yaxchilan, Bonampak, Uxmal, Coba and Chichen-Itza. She has also traveled to Germany, Africa and Spain for gem and bead buying and to gain new design insights.

Collette is a member of the American Craft Council, the Florida Society of Goldsmiths, the American Craft Museum, the Art League of Long Island and the Pre-Columbian Society of the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology.
